A rare WWI tank crew splatter mask, the upper section of metal construction covered with leather, the eye apertures with horizontal vision slits, the lower section of chain mail with chamois leather lining, these masks were introduced in 1917 to protect tank crews from small particles of metal and lead fragments flying across the inside of the tank when it came under fire in a battle
