The works of William Paley DD (1743-1805)
Paley was appointed Archdeacon of Carlisle in 1782. He was known for his writings on philosophy, ethics and his support for the abolition of the slave trade. He developed the theory of evolution which became known as "the watchmaker" theory.
His works here include A View of the Evidences of Christianity, Horae Paulinae (The Truth of the Scripture History of St Paul) and The Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy (all 1823, printed by John Fairbairn, Edinburgh
