The Book of Silchester, Hampshire by James Thomson, 2 volumes (1924) (31 x 26cm) limited edition of 175, this copy having been signed by the author and presented for Review to the Editor of the Daily Telegraph, 8th December 1924
Silchester, now no more than a small village in Hampshire, was, during Roman times, known as Calleva Atrebatum and was a principal city in the province.
The complete circuit of the Roman walls, some of the best-preserved Roman town defences in England, and remains of the amphitheatre still stand.
Silchester was thought to have been abandoned when the Anglo-Saxons gave preference to Winchester as a major city in the area.
