Royal Air Force Provenance / Interest. Rolex, a gentleman’s Oyster Perpetual Explorer wristwatch, ref. 6610 (c1957) serial number: 268190.
Tropical dial, seemingly original throughout (likely with later glass) with baton and quarterly Arabic numerals and original polished stainless steel strap
Owned since original purchase by Squadron Leader Gordon Candy RAF (1922 - 2006)
Candy served throughout the Second World War in a number of squadrons, mostly mosquitos - later specialising in helicopters becoming an expert on the Belvedere, Whirlwind and Wessex. He survived at least one hairy landing with an engine on fire, becoming heavily commended ahead of his retirement in 1977 - serving his country with exemplary conduct throughout his entire working life, he passed away in 2006.
This piece is privately consigned by direct family decent. Information regarding Candy’s life and career has been referenced from the eulogy given at his funeral by Brigadier Keith Prentice RA (Candy’s nephew)
This watch was worn by Squadron Leader Candy (it is believed daily) until his passing in 2006. From then until consignment to auction in March 2024 it had not been worn but continues to run / tick at the point of cataloging.
Other than likely a replacement glass, it is not believed to have had any replacements or adaptations following purchase in circa 1957.
The dial has obtained a green tone / patina. The luminous compound to hands is degraded / lacking in places. The strap and case work show gentle but comprehensive wear following a lifetime’s use.
