Two paintings by the Wirgman brothers: Charles I Wirgman (1832-1891) 'Louvain', watercolour and pencil, titled lower left with artist's name to label verso, 11 x 15 cm; Theodore Blake Wirgman (1848-1925) - 'A Scottish Scene' (1907), signed and dated lower right, gouache, 20 x 33 cm, both mounted, framed and glazed. Charles Wirgman was a draftsman, caricaturist and an illustrator for Illustrated London News as well as the author and publisher for 'Japan Punch'. He was an early teacher of Western painting techniques in Japan and settled in Yokohama in 1861. His brother Theodore Wirgman was a painter, engraver and portrait artist born in Belgium, and later living in Britain and France. He is best known for his chalk drawings of politicians and writers.
