Circle of Antonio David (1698–1750) - Portrait of Maria Clementina Sobieska (18th Century), half-length in a gold dress and ermine-lined cloak with her crown beside her, oil on canvas, with label inscribed 'Clementina Sobieska on 'Old Pretender'' and indistinctly dated '1719'? verso, unsigned, 102 x 80 cm. Maria Clementina Sobieska (1702–1735) was the wife of James Francis Edward Stuart, a Jacobite claimant to the British throne. Descended from the Polish king John III Sobieski, she was the mother of Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") and Henry Benedict Cardinal Stuart.
Evidence of historic restoration and relining. There is a horizontal scratch to the painting surface approx. 1 cm wide across the droplet of her headdress.
