Victorian day dress C1840 hand stitched in printed cotton, with full skirt tightly gathered and piped at the waist seam, with large horizontal folds forming a tier effect through the skirt length. Dress has hook and eye fastenings and has stays in the side seams. The lower skirt edge has lining and a bound edge (to reinforce the fabric that would have been in contact with the ground and to add weight). Photos show dress with added padding to the skirt to demonstrate the fullness and replicate crinoline shaping
